ARTIST
STATEMENT
Art has a way of opening the mind and the heart. In the
last century art seemed to concentrate more on the mind and
in doing so it became more of an intellectual exercise which
has in some ways excluded many people. When someone visiting
a gallery needs an artist or art historian to interpret the
piece and its importance, something is lost.
As a military spouse for twenty five years, change and relocation
were the only constant. Labels, which categorize and statistics,
which file people can depersonalize our very personal lives.
In the military my designation was D/W (dependant wife) and
when I divorced I felt like a statistic which explained why
I was divorced. As an artist I seek to reveal who I am from
the inside out - neither a statistic, nor a designation and
certainly not an intellectual exercise.
In my work I use the traditional subjects of landscape and
flowers as metaphors for my own life experiences and the ways
in which they affect me. I do not seek to have my work replicate
beauty but beauty is a part of my work. Watercolor is my favorite
medium. I am excited by the layers and transition that can
occur in water. Capturing the light is a constant challenge.
What I most enjoy about oils and acrylic is the opportunity
to work large and use not only brushes but my hands right
in the work. I seek to allow the same kind of transitions
that occur in watercolor to enter the other mediums as well.
If when you view my work you have some idea about the artist
then I am satisfied.
